Closure - Metaphor on lesson learnt in EIR =D

Metaphor? M (fill in the blanks)?? Joking, that was what I was using for the day1 intro. =D I guess I still haven’t thought of any yet.

Now another metaphor for the course? Hmms…. Not sure now. But I’ve always used this word “Awesome” as part of my daily used words. Guess it shall be part of my time in EIR.

Every lesson in EIR is important though. As it is a skill now. Although I cannot seem to catch some of the things put across. But I know, soon I’ll be using this skill in my diploma and other researches I’ll be doing. Although we all may be playing games and listening to lessons at the same time, doing funny things, doing our projects at the last minute and talking nonsense. =D

Lesson’s always been fun in EIR I really think maybe because EIR’s coming to an end.

Although I don’t want to have another CDS for school discovery prog, I think that it is actually a good program, and I will benefit from it. =D

reflections on lecture 5&6

For the wiki activities, What group? For the topic discussion or what? I’m not sure about that. But still, I shall talk about my experience.

The learning experience for me is the ethics of wiki. I find that it is very important to respect other’s work while uploading your share on wiki.

I felt that it is a good place where information and research can be shared on a similar topic of interest and correction can be done if the data is wrong. And it also provides learning for the poster and other readers. VERY BENIFICIAL ISSIN’T IT?? HAHA

So, “what if this bugger, who goes signs-in with a bogus account and starts deleting everything editable??” There goes the entire research. But so far no problems, no challenges in the post I added in. =D SAFE.

Advice to next batch of wiki groups: Do your research well and take pride in it. Then upload your fantastic work on the wiki! =D

I would certainly use wiki for my own diploma, as it also enables me to find out more information and to share what I have with them. But the only problem is, I HATE TO CREATE ACCOUNTS!!!! Coz I’m spammed with so much time remembering all my accounts in different sites and stuff.

Reflection on lecture3&4

I don’t use twitter. But I use facebook. I rather find that Facebook is more appealing as I can do more. But as seen from Ms Faridah’s twitter, she has many friends from different industries who can provide her with information. I find that t is much better in a way that you have to be more responsible as many people can see your tweets and could follow them at any point in time. In comparision to Blogger, it is a normal blog service. It allows more functions like template design and a customizable profile. Twitter only allows text and has a limit to the size of the post, no customizable templates.

These 2 services could be used for research purposes. Like posting of research information and findings. I find this better than wiki-ing as it allows users to keep their work unedited by others. And comments or PMs could be used to correct the user.

My Dream Holiday Destination

My dream holiday destination can be any place where I will enjoy myself the most. Actually I haven’t thought about the place because I don’t think of travelling out always. I would rather go to a place where there would be good scenery and good subjects to take photographs. And a good holiday is a place where I have my friends and family together. But sometimes it is good to go around solo, just that it may be a bad idea if the place I go to is very foreign to me.

Maybe it would be Japan for me. As I love Japanese food so much!! HAHA. Well, also because I recently learnt some Japanese culture and basic conversation at CDS during the PPP. And I’m interested in some anime series which I’m following and have watched previously. Also I enjoy watching some Japanese entertainment shows like Japan hour which shows the Japanese food and commentaries on places in Japan. I guess doing all these made me interested in going to Japan.

My Japanese lecturer gave us this pamphlet which showed us the visit Japan 2010 site links. The website is: http://www.vjy2010.jp/

I evaluated the site with the criteria of presentation and arrangement.

At the top right hand corner of the homepage, there is a search function and a language bar. The site allows visitors to change languages. 6 languages, English, Chinese(simplified or Traditional), Korean, French, German and Thai. The Search function utilizes Google to search for topics of Japan.

It has a very good Graphical Utility Interface(GUI), highlighting the region on a minimap with some pictures of the region.

The contents of the site is also very attractive. It has very nice images and flash pictures to attract the visitors.

They do posts updates on the site for tourists to view. Like transport, accommodations and events happening around for the period.

Evaluation of stomp and views on sharing on wiki

I used the criteria of purpose to evaluate Stomp. Why purpose? Because these stompers are trying to put a point across for the readers to understand their views. As citizen journalism is also brought about by the citizen’s views on a particular subject. And without the purpose of their post, what is there to post and upload about? For me, although I find that some posts are very retarded, but I realize that the poster had something he wants to post. Even a post comes with a purpose. Without purpose, What is there to post?

I don’t actually wiki much as I don’t think I’m the kind who would opt for wiki-ing. Even though I sometimes get information from wikis. No doubt it is very easy to just add in information into these wikis. Sometimes it actually gets to a point where users have conflicts over a certain understanding and refuses to discuss it. And the information is always confused. And the topic is always open to any edits by other users. So I guess that the editing and adding of information is also based on trust and the proper citation of sources if used.

Reflection on invincible web

For my topic, “discuss the role of robots in society” the search results are not as desired. And the results are mostly journals and data information. For research topics like that, it is actually quite impossible to get research information. As the database is not updated or that the subject is not widely discussed.

I still find that any normal search engine/meta-search/subject directories can do the search better for my topic. Still in any case, the idea of using the invincible web is feasible in any situation where you need detailed information on a common subject of research. Maybe like the programming codes for reference is needed for my diploma, it may come in handy or another research topic which is more commonly discussed and it is added into the database.

For me, I will not use the invincible web unless in need detailed information/data of common topic for research. And also, most of the results can be found on search engines rather than going through the database and not retrieving the right information. This also reduces the time to search the database for the exact needed information/data.

I find that the wiki sharing is very useful. As it is where similar topic of interest is shared. For me, I only managed to post my information found. I didn’t have time to look through the other posts to add in my share in the other posts. I find that wiki-ing is interesting. As I can learn from my mistakes which people can correct as they overwrite my post.

Reflections on meta-search & subj directory & site feeding & wiki

The benefits of using multiple search facilities is that we can get a variety of results of topics wanted for a research. Such as the research topic I'm working on. In order to find the desired results, i used a few facilities in order to find the resources i need.

In practical 4&5, we learnt about meta-search and subject directories. I find these both facilities alien, although i have heard of them and hardly use them. But utilizing them actually helps users to define a clearer search result as it has a different search system from normal search engines.

Meta-search utilizes the databases of search engines and complies them together. This reduces the user's time to search individual search engines for a particular topic.

Subject directories also known as subject catalogues, as they are human-compiled database and topical lists are arranged and searched in a hierarchical manner. This allows keyword searches to be more effective. And it usually contains links to subject related sites/reference works/specialized database.

Site feeding is a specialized operation of sites where it allows other users reading your site to keep track of updates of your site. I feel that it is a good way as people do not have to always go to your site for updates. The they can also follow the site by applications which updates the other users who subscribe to your site. And the application informs them when the site is being updated.

On a wiki site sharing information is very interesting. It is a place where we can share information and learn from each other by sharing and editing to correct people's mistakes which are uploaded. This is a good way to share information over the net and it also promotes learning.

But i realize that sometimes when a person is too over possessive over the information posted, he/she would not be open to other's input of data or correction of the data. If that is the case, he/she may as well not start a wiki page and start their own non-wiki site.
